Canadian Hospital Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP)

There are 15 Hospitals participating throughout Canada. BC Children’s is the only hospital in BC that has this program.

What is CHIRPP?

·         A self reporting Injury Surveillance System (meaning that patients/parents fill out the form thereby giving/not giving permission to contact them for further research purposes. If the coordinator fills out the form contact for research is automatically NO)

Purpose of CHIRPP

·         Collect high quality, accessible, timely data

·         Provide quality assurance, software development

·         Provide information on risk situations, populations at risk, new hazards

·         Support and inform prevention programs, policy development, and research

·         Provide a tool to assist in monitoring injury occurrence, evaluating prevention programs

·         Assist in education of the public

Type of information collected

·         All unintentional injuries (falls, MVC, burns, poisonings, alcohol, drugs etc) and intentional injuries (suicides, self inflicted, maltreatment) are collected

The who, what, why, when, where and how of injury events.

Treatment received

·         Nature and body part involved

·         Substance use (what they drank/or took)

·         Intent – (accident, intentional, assault, maltreatment)

·         Safety devices in use at the time of injury

How is data collected?

Patient/Guardian fills out the CHIRPP green form) in ER

Coordinator does chart review to collect missing data, forms are then sent to Ottawa, entered into the national database and a disk is sent back to each hospital.

Why is Injury Surveillance important?

Provides a current “picture” of injury occurrence

Identifying & tracking causes, subgroups at increased risk, and tracking emerging injury hazards

Help establish priorities for research & intervention and evaluate effect of intervention strategies & prevention programs

Strengths

Collection of information on the circumstances surrounding injuries.

Information gathered directly from the patient or guardian
