Reported Injuries in Child Care Services
September, 2006 
A review of reported injury data among children attending child care services in the Vancouver Island Health Authority. This report is meant to draw together indoor and outdoor playground data from incident reports submitted to the Licensing Office by the child care services in order to (a) describe the injury trends and patterns in Vancouver Island; (b) describe the leading causes of injuries among children attending child care services in the Vancouver Island; and (d) provide recommendations based on current research and programming relevant to the leading cause of injury.

Motor Vehicle Crashes Among Young Drivers : Systematic Review and Recommendations for BC
November, 2005
A systematic review of the current review literature undertaken to identify prevention strategies for motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) and intervention strategies for crash-related injuries occurring among young drivers. Six strategies for keeping young drivers safe were identified from systematic review articles, six strategies were identified from review articles, and two risk factors without accompanying strategies were also found. Recommendations for BC regarding each of these prevention and intervention strategies were formulated based on the collective evidence.

Baseline Report on Injuries 2005, Northern Health
November, 2005
A review of baseline injury data among residents in the Northern Health. This report is meant to draw together data from mortality and hospital separation datasets in order to (a) describe the injury trends and patterns in Northern Health; (b) compare injury rates in Northern Health with the injury rates of BC; (c) describe the leading causes of injury mortality and hospital separation among residents of Northern Health; (d) provide recommendations based on current research and programming relevant to the leading causes of injury; (e) synthesize and report on key points and next steps.

Unintentional Injuries in BC: Trends and Patterns Among Children & Youth

This comprehensive report describes the patterns of unintentional injury among children and youth (less than 25 years old) in BC. It is based on mortality, hospitalization and emergency department data acquired from sources including BC Vital Statistics (mortality), BC Ministry of Health (hospitalization) and the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting & Prevention Program and BC's Children's Hospital (emergency department).

A report developing a profile of unintentional fatal and non-fatal falls among older adults and seniors in BC, based on mortality and hospitalization data. This study assesses the burden of injuries and deaths due to falls, and examines some of the available evidence related to risk factors and risk conditions surrounding falls among the elderly. Comparisons are also drawn between deaths and hospitalizations due to falls and other selected external causes of injury, and future projections are conducted based on current trends in hospitalizations.

A project with three components: the examination of existing evidence on the effectiveness of current prevention strategies in selected sports and recreational activities; the determination of the applicability of this evidence to children and youth and to the Canadian setting; and the making of recommendations related to best practice (policy and programming) and future research needs in this area.

A Best Practices Guide for the Prevention of Falls Among Seniors Living in the Community:

This guide is based on a systematic review of studies that evaluated the effectiveness of fall prevention programs for community-dwelling seniors. The purpose is to combine the knowledge of multiple studies into an effect tool to help practitioners, government and other health organizations in reducing injuries among seniors.

Injury Prevention Program Evaluation Manual

A manual created to make evaluation a user-friendly process, to assist communities in British Columbia in evaluating their injury prevention programs. The manual takes the reader step-by-step through the design and implementation process of an evaluation. It provides definitions for commonly used evaluation terms and concepts and provides useful examples, worksheets and exercises.

Effects of Neighbourhood, Family, and Child Behaviour on Childhood Injury in Canada
March, 2001
A study addressing three groups of questions relating to childhood injury in Canada: (1) Is the relationship between family functioning and childhood injuries mediated or modified by parenting or child behaviour? (2) Which is more strongly related to childhood injuries, family socioeconomic status (SES) or indicators of neighbourhood disadvantage? Do they modify the effect of each other? The interaction of these factors with family functioning, parenting or child behaviour is also examined in order to identify the relevant units for intervention (family, neighbourhood or both). (3) Can the models developed based on the previous steps predict injuries two years later? Relevant data are taken from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and Youth. All analyses are stratified by children’s age groups.

Patterns of Motor Vehicle Traffic Injuries in British Columbia: 1995-1998
September, 2000

This study is designed to develop a profile of fatal and nonfatal Motor Vehicle Traffic injuries in BC based on three categories of data: mortality, hospitalization, and emergency department. The ultimate goal is to identify meaningful and realistic recommendations for motor vehicle traffic safety.

A Canadian Picture of Maternal Reports of Childhood Injuries
November, 1999
This study examines gender and age differences in maternal reports of injuries in a cross sectional group of children aged 0-11 years. The cause, nature, body part injured, and location of injury are explored, as are the associations with family socioeconomic indicators and associations with limitations in activities. In addition, we report patterns of health care use for injured and non-injured children by examining contacts with a variety of medical health care professionals by child age group and gender.

Safe Kids Week 2002: "Got Wheels, Get A Helmet!" Program Evaluation
This program evaluated the Safe Kids Week annual campaign designed to promote safety and awareness of children and youth when engaging in recreational activities requiring helmet use. Presented at the Maternal and Child/Youth Health Conference in Vancouver, BC, November, 2003.

Suicide Attempts and Gestures among Children and Youth in British Columbia, CHIRPP Data 1997-2002
This report describes the circumstances and means by which children and youth are harming themselves as presented to British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital Emergency Department. The aim of this study is to continue the investigation of intentional injury among children and youth aged 5 to 19 years in BC. Presented at the Canadian Conference of Injury Prevention and Control, Halifax, N.S., Nov, 2005.

Sports and Recreation Injury Prevention Strategies: A Systematic Review
An overview and preliminary results from a systematic look at literature addressing injury prevention measures for sports and recreation activities. Presented at the 5th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Control: Sharing Experiences Blending Perspectives in New Delhi, India, March, 2000.

Sports Injuries Among Youth as Seen in Four Emergency Participating in EDISS
EDISS data is used to describe sports injuries among youth aged 10 to 24 years old in the Fraser South Valley (Langley Memorial, Delta, Peach Arch and Surrey Memorial Hospitals). Presented at Canadian Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion Conference 2003 in Ottawa, Ontario, November, 2003.

The Role of Emergency Department Data in Injury Surveillance: Comparison of Emergency Department and Hospitalization Data to Describe Injuries Among Children and Youth
An overview of data collected by EDISS from 2000 - 2003. EDISS and hospitalization data are compared to demonstrate the added value to currently available hospitalization and mortality data. Presented at the Maternal and Child/Youth Health Conference in Vancouver, BC, November, 2003.

Unintentional Injuries in British Columbia: Trends and Patterns Among Children and Youth
A data analysis describing injury mortality and hospitalization variation by age, gender, injury category and leading causes, and highlighting subgroups of the study population who are at higher risk for injury by region, year and place of occurance of injury events. Time trends by year, age group, sex and region are also described. Injuries seen in emergency departments are examined by age, gender, time of occurance, activity, location, mechanism, breakdown event, nature of injury, injured area of the body and outcome of emergency department visits.
